Three anadromous fish species (Dolly Varden, cutthrout, and coho salmon) are found in the following areas:
Dredge Creek
Dredge Lake
Moose Lake
Holding Pond
Access for anadromous fish has been intentionally blocked to permit stocking of other species which were unlikely to hybridize with the anadromous fish. Juvenile anadromous fish often migrate to other fresh water areas with better rearing habitat. During periods of low water flow, the Beaver Patrol will make small notches in beaver dams to assist juvenile fish movement. In the fall, larger notches will be made to assist the movement of adult coho salmon to spawning areas.
Stocking has not occurred for several years in the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, and is not included in the Alaska Fish & Game five-year plan. Several years ago triploid rainbows, which were much less likely to hybridize with cutthroats, were stocked in:
Crystal Lake
Moraine Lake
Glacier Lake
Norton Lake was used in the 1970s to raise juvenile salmon, but has not been stocked since then. Cashew Lake was stocked for several years, but not in about the last 50 years.
Years ago cutthroats from Florence Lake were stocked in Moraine Lake, until one showed up in Mendenhall Lake. Flooding was considered the reason that fish can occasionally appear in unintended areas.
Sticklebacks are found throughout the area.
