Generally Mallards in Southeast Alaska are nonmigratory. They are very adaptable and have been introduced into many South American countries, and even South Africa.
Males have green heads, while the female heads are speckled brown. Young mallards can swim shortly after hatching. Commonly mallard families will swim through gaps in beaver dams.
Early in the spring we have have seen up to 11 ducklings following their mother, but eagles and other predators often reduce the number in the mallard family.
