Previously referred to as the Northern Goshawk. In 2023 the American Ornithological Society split Northern Goshawk into two species. The American Goshawk lives in North America, and the Eurasian Goshawk occurs in Europe and Asia.
Goshawks were used in falconry for centuries. They don't like neighbors and will leave an area if there is too much human traffic, or noise, near their nest. There are very few in the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area (perhaps a single nesting pair). This makes it important not to make a trail too close to a nesting tree.
